This is a vintage Japanese chawan, a hand-thrown tea bowl used for matcha, Japan's powdered green tea.
An irregular, hand-formed rim gives this bowl a distorted silhouette (kutsu-gata), with a mottled tortoiseshell-like glaze in brown and black. Narrow unglazed foot.
