Merchants Chests

Choba-dansu, or Japanese merchant’s chests, were traditionally used by shopkeepers and tradesmen during the Edo period to store ledgers, valuables, and important documents. Built with solid wood and reinforced with iron hardware, these cabinets were designed for security and durability, often featuring lockable compartments and an intricate arrangement of drawers and doors.

In a modern setting, Japanese merchant’s chests serve as stylish and functional storage solutions, ideal for living rooms, hallways, or offices. Their striking combination of warm natural wood and handcrafted metalwork adds a unique character to any space. Whether you appreciate the history of Edo-era craftsmanship or simply need a practical and elegant storage piece, a choba-dansu brings both tradition and versatility to contemporary homes.
