A vintage Japanese ceramic tanuki statue in black and cream, a small slip against its chest symbolizing trust and honesty, beneath a wide hat.
Dark iron-black glaze covers the hat and coat, left unglazed in cream across the face, belly and paws for contrast. A brushed character on the chest slip reads as 通 (meaning to pass through). A small stamped circular mark sits at the hip. The form carries a rounded belly. Light wear is visible on the glaze.
