Vintage Japanese Ceramic Tanuki Figure
A vintage Japanese ceramic tanuki figure.
This figure is modelled seated and clutching a large money bag with a rope tie, and a smaller bag bearing a kanji character at its feet. The surface carries a mottled sandy glaze with dark brown tones throughout.
Tanuki (raccoon dogs) are a classical Japanese folkloric symbol, associated with good fortune, hospitality, and a touch of mischief, traditionally displayed at the entrance of homes and businesses as a welcoming omen.
