Antique Set of Small Seto Ware Japanese Plates, Edo Period

Sale price$175
1 in stock

A set of ten antique Japanese miniature ceramic plates from Seto or Mino kiln regions, dating back to the late Edo period.

Measuring 7cm wide, these pieces feature a yellowish-cream ash glaze with a heavy, natural crackle texture. The small bare clay patches are kiln scars, a result of the plates being stacked directly on top of each other during firing.

Because of their tiny size, they were likely either used as toumyo-zara to hold oil and wicks for paper lanterns, or as mamezara for small pinches of condiments.
